Using donor eggs together with IVF is a recognised approach in cases where patients are unable to use their own eggs, and in some cases it may be the only option. Common reasons for needing to use donor eggs include premature ovarian failure, poor egg quality due to chronological age, inadequate response to ovarian stimulation in previous IVF treatment cycles or absence of ovaries because of either surgery or a congenital condition.
However, finding a suitable donor can be a daunting, lengthy, and stressful process with no guarantee of success. Using eggs which have already been retrieved and frozen helps eliminate some of the risks involved and means that treatment can start without any delay.
