Virtual fertility support for men

Virtual fertility support for men

November is Men’s Health Awareness Month. While the conversation around fertility is often centred towards women, discussion about male infertility is long overdue.

Nearly one in seven couples is infertile, which means they haven’t been able to conceive a child after trying for a year or longer. In up to half of these couples, male infertility plays at least a partial role.

Male fertility can be caused by:

  • Low sperm production
  • Abnormal sperm function
  • Blockages that prevent the delivery of sperm
  • Illnesses
  • Injuries
  • Chronic health problems
  • Lifestyle choices

While men don’t experience a drop in fertility after a certain age in the same way women do, sperm counts do deteriorate, usually between the ages of 35-40, while treatment for illnesses such as cancer can impact fertility.

New research reported by New Scientist suggests that male fertility could be restored by reimplanting frozen testes tissue. A clinic in Belgium has been given the go-ahead to reimplant frozen testicular tissue to obtain sperm for fertility treatments. The hope is that the procedure will allow those whose fertility was destroyed by cancer treatments before they reached puberty to have children.

If you have been trying to conceive for over a year, you may be ready to look into additional support. Embarking on fertility treatment is one of the biggest, and perhaps most daunting, life decisions many couples and individuals will ever make.
