It’s understandable to be concerned if you are told that your endometrial lining looks ‘too thin’ during IVF. For a long time, fertility specialists have viewed a thin lining as an indicator that implantation is unlikely, which could lead to embryo transfer being cancelled. A new study has suggested however that positive outcomes may still be possible even with a persistently thin lining.
Researchers at Yale School of Medicine* found that when the uterus is otherwise healthy – with no scar tissue or structural problems – women with thin endometrial linings can still have successful IVF outcomes.
A large international study, involving over 30,000 embryo transfers, found that when the lining measured under 7mm, success rates did drop somewhat in medicated cycles. But in fully natural cycles, a thinner lining didn’t appear to reduce chances of success in the same way. The study also noted that results varied depending on the clinic and the treatment protocol.
So what does this mean for patients? A thin lining isn’t the whole story. While it is important, it’s not the only factor that determines whether IVF will be successful. The results of the study suggest that it is worthwhile your fertility specialist considering the bigger picture: the type of cycle you’re undergoing, the health of your uterus, and other signs that are favourable for implantation.
In conclusion, a thin lining doesn’t necessarily mean your IVF cycle will be unsuccessful – it may still be possible to achieve a pregnancy.
