Research Roundup:
Does Freezing Embryos Longer Affect IVF Success?

A nationwide study in Denmark* explored a common question for IVF patients: Does keeping embryos frozen for a long time reduce the chances of pregnancy or a healthy baby?

Researchers looked at over 12,000 frozen embryo transfers in 7,042 women between 2012 and 2019.

They grouped embryos by how long they had been stored, ranging from 3 months or less up to 25 months or more.

Here’s what they found:

Takeaway message

Keeping embryos frozen for longer periods does not appear to reduce your chances of a healthy pregnancy or baby.

Egg Freezing in Endometriosis

Egg Freezing in Endometriosis

Endometriosis affects women of reproductive age and can cause painful periods, painful intercourse, and infertility. The disease often impacts ovarian function, leading to cysts, scar tissue, and reduced ovarian reserve, which can complicate natural conception and assisted reproduction.

Egg freezing has emerged as a promising option for women with endometriosis who wish to preserve their fertility. By freezing eggs at a younger age—ideally before 35 and prior to any ovarian surgery—women can safeguard their future reproductive options. While not a guarantee, egg freezing offers peace of mind and a proactive approach to family planning.

Trying to Conceive and Weight Loss:
How to Do It Safely

Trying to conceive (TTC) can bring up lots of questions about weight, health and optimisation.

If you would like to lose weight before or during your fertility journey, it’s important that it’s done in a way that supports — not stresses — your hormones.

Here’s what to focus on.

1. Prioritise hormone safety over speed

Rapid weight loss, very low-calorie diets and extreme approaches can disrupt ovulation and menstrual regularity.

Instead of aiming for fast results, aim for:

Your reproductive system responds best to consistency, not extremes.

2. Eat to nourish, not restrict

Fertility-friendly weight loss isn’t about cutting out entire food groups.

Focus on:

Under-eating can increase stress hormones like cortisol, which may negatively affect ovulation.

3. Protect your menstrual cycle

Your cycle is one of the best indicators of whether your body feels safe.

Watch for:

If your cycle changes significantly, your deficit may be too aggressive.

4. Include strength training

Resistance training helps:

2–4 sessions per week is a strong starting point.

5. Manage stress alongside weight

Weight loss itself is a stressor. TTC is often emotional.

Layering both together means nervous system regulation becomes essential:

You don’t need perfection. You need consistency.

Takeaway message

Weight loss can support fertility in certain cases — but only when done in a way that protects hormones, energy and cycle health.

If you’re TTC, think long-term metabolic health rather than short-term scale changes.

Your body needs to feel safe before it prioritises reproduction.

Ask the Experts
- Is single embryo transfer best for me?

Multiple births are one of the biggest risks of fertility treatment, for both patients and babies.

In the past, the belief was that transferring multiple embryos in IVF increased the chances of at least one successfully implanting and leading to a live birth. Patients tended to view the possibility that they might end up with twins – or more – as a positive.

Gradually however there was growing realisation that the risks associated with transferring multiple embryos – including miscarriage, premature birth, pre-eclampsia, stillbirth and even maternal or neonatal death – outweighed the potential benefits.

Today single embryo transfer is strongly recommended for patients who have a high likelihood of success with one embryo, for example patients under 35, especially those undergoing their first or second cycle, and those with good quality embryos and no history of miscarriage or uterine abnormalities. Advances in genetic screening and embryo freezing have made it possible to ensure that only chromosomally normal embryos are selected for transfer, increasing the chances of success with a single embryo.

For some individuals however – older women, those with poor quality embryos or embryos not genetically screened, or with a history of multiple failed IVF cycles – an alternative approach might be beneficial.
