Miscarriage and the failure of IVF treatment are two stressful and disappointing situations for patients in general and for women in particular. An etiological assessment and psychological support are often proposed.
What can be done ?
In-vitro fertilisation (IVF) with preimplantaion genetic testing (PGT) are often recommended. This procedure makes it possible to check an embryo for chromosomal and genetic abnormalities before implantation. This may increase the chances of having a healthy baby and reduce the risk of miscarriage. However, the results are still controversial depending on the technique of PGT used and there is a lack of evidence that this procedure improves live birth rates according to the European Society for Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) guidelines.
Another option for the treatment in case of recurrent implantation failure and recurrent miscarriage is IVF with donor eggs. As the age of a woman increases (to more than 38 years), her eggs are at a higher risk of chromosomal abnormalities and more likely to be poor quality, resulting in an increase of miscarriage. A young egg donor could be a solution to reduce the risk of IVF failure and that of miscarriage.
Who is it for ?
In case of recurrent implantation failure or recurrent miscarriages (more than two consecutive miscarriages), especially when women are aged more than 38 years.
