How to choose your fertility treatment

How to choose your fertility treatment

Author: Annette Eckersley, Group Assistant & Communication Manager, NOW-fertility

Choosing the right fertility treatment is a significant decision, but one that should become easier once you consider all the relevant factors. As well as opting for the right treatment, you should also think carefully about the fertility specialist that you choose, ensuring that you are confident in the care that they and their team will give you and  that they will be available whenever you need them.

Understand your diagnosis

The first step for many people is to understand why fertility treatment may be necessary. This  involves consulting with a fertility specialist who can evaluate your situation and arrange any tests and investigations that you need. The diagnosis that you get will help to determine what your treatment options are.

Alternatively you may already be aware of the reason why you need fertility treatment to conceive but it is still worthwhile seeing a specialist to know more about your options.

Explore your treatment options

Common treatments include IVF, IVF with ICSI (for male factor subfertility), IVF with egg donation or sperm donation (if there are significant egg or sperm issues), surrogacy (if carrying a pregnancy would be impossible or unsafe) and fertility preservation (freezing eggs, sperm or embryos for use in the future). You may also be considering advanced treatments like IVF for gender selection, for either medical or family balancing reasons.

Consider your personal preferences

Consider what your own preferences are, and if relevant, those of your partner, taking into account factors such as where the treatment you want is available, what the likely success rates are, how much it costs, and what the potential physical and emotional impacts could be. One of the most important factors to think about is age and timeframe – for example if you are already over 35, it may be appropriate to move directly to IVF rather than to try alternatives first.

The NOW-fertility approach

A dedicated care team – consultant, nurse and care coordinator – works with each patient to empower them to make the best and most informed decisions about their treatment options. Since we work with a network of partner clinics worldwide, we are able to provide access to treatments that may not be available in the country where you live.
