How to get the right support during IVF treatment

How to get the right support during your IVF treatment

Author: Annette Eckersley, Group Assistant & Communication Manager, NOW-fertility

IVF treatment can be very overwhelming, especially if it is your first cycle. The full process can take time, injecting the stimulation medications can be daunting, costs are often quite high and results can still not be as expected.

Alleviating anxiety and stress as much as possible during this time could help to play a vital part in the success of the treatment.

Here are some suggestions for surrounding yourself with the right support.

Build a supportive network

Open communication with your partner, if you have one, is key for mutual understanding and emotional support. Communicate openly with family and friends as well, especially if you are undergoing treatment alone, and let them know how they can help you, either practically or emotionally or both.

Join a support group

Hearing from and talking to others who understand your experience can be invaluable. There are support groups for IVF patients available to meet both online or in person. Take some time to search for one that would suit you best and who you feel most comfortable with.

Seek help from a professional

Your clinic will be able to put you in contact with experienced fertility counsellors and fertility coaches with whom they work, for additional support before, during or after your IVF cycle.

Engage with your workplace

If your workplace is aware of and supportive of you undergoing treatment, arranging for time off or flexible working during the critical phases of your treatment is likely to help you to feel less stressed.

NOW-fertility

At NOW-fertility, we believe that having a personal team dedicated to each patient helps them feel reassured and supported. Knowing that we are always available has a huge impact on their care.

With their years of experience our fertility nurses have learned to recognise when their patients are in need of additional support.

In addition, we offer counselling sessions or fertility coaching when we believe that our patient could benefit from even more help.
