Common Questions about IVF for Gender Selection

Common Questions about IVF for Gender Selection

What is IVF for gender selection?

Gender selection involves using IVF to create embryos which are then tested for chromosomal abnormalities and their gender. Once the gender is identified, only embryos of the desired gender are transferred back into the patient’s uterus.

How is gender selection performed?

A technique known as pre-implantation genetic testing (PGT) is used to determine the gender of embryos created through IVF. It involves removing a small number of cells by biopsy from each embryo to screen for genetic abnormalities and gender. Following PGT, the embryos will be frozen until the screening results are available, and following receipt of the results the frozen embryo transfer is scheduled provided there are embryos of the desired gender.

Why is it done?

Common reasons for choosing gender selection include:

  • To avoid passing on genetic diseases linked to a specific gender
  • Family balancing
  • Personal preferences

Is it legal?

IVF for gender selection is not legal in all countries. In some it is permitted for both medical and social reasons, in others for medical but not social reasons, and in some countries not at all.

How accurate is gender selection?

The accuracy of gender selection using PGT is very high, typically around 99%. However, there is no guarantee that embryos of the desired gender will be available to transfer in to the uterus.

Is it safe?

Gender selection does not generally pose any additional risks for either the mother or the embryo. However as with any IVF process, there are certain risks involved such as ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome or multiple pregnancy if more than one embryo is transferred back.

Does it improve the success rate of IVF?

Gender selection per se does not improve success rates in IVF, however because it involves PGT, only healthy embryos which are chromosomally normal will be transferred back therefore reducing the chance of failed implantation and miscarriage.
