Fertility and endometriosis

Fertility and endometriosis

The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that endometriosis affects around 10% of reproductive age women and girls globally. But what is it and how can it affect fertility?

Endometrium is the lining of the womb. In endometriosis, tissue that is similar to this lining adheres and grows in other places in the body, including the ovaries and fallopian tubes, and sometimes other organs, often causing a range of symptoms, including severe pelvic pain, bloating, nausea…and difficulty conceiving.

Endometriosis can be difficult to diagnose because symptoms are often similar to those of other conditions, so if you are suffering any of the typical symptoms, your GP may recommend that you see a gynaecologist for tests such as an ultrasound scan or a laparoscopy – keyhole surgery that helps identify endometriosis tissue.

When it comes to fertility, we know that some – but not all, women suffering from endometriosis can experience difficulty in becoming pregnant, most likely because of distortion of the normal anatomy and damage to the fallopian tubes and/or ovaries. Medical therapy is not recommended in women with endometriosis-associated infertility, whereas surgery to remove endometriosis tissue can aid conception in some cases.

However, even in women with endometriosis age is a main determining factor for fertility potential, so if you do suffer from endometriosis and know you would like to start a family, either now or in the future, the consultants team at NOW-fertility recommends speaking to your GP or a fertility specialist to find out all the options open to you. There are also charities to support women with endometriosis, such as Endometriosis UK, which offers guidance for women who are considering pregnancy.
