My contribution to a patient’s IVF with donor eggs treatment in Poland

Author: Anna Balchan (Fertility Nurse Manager, NOW-fertility)

I recently cared for a NOW-fertility patient who had IVF treatment using donor eggs at our partner clinic in Poland. My goal was to ensure that the patient felt informed, relaxed, well supported and comfortable with the communication and the care before embarking on the IVF treatment using donor eggs provided by our partner egg bank.

My initial contact with the patient was during a virtual consultation. We started with a general friendly chat, then we moved on to discussing the list of potential donors we could offer based on the characteristics that the patient was looking for.

Once a suitable egg donor was chosen, we moved to the next stage. I organised the transport of the donor eggs to our partner clinic in Poland for the fertilisation of the eggs using sperm from the patient’s partner and thereafter the embryo transfer under ultrasound guidance. Everything was organised by NOW-fertility and the patient was informed when the eggs were leaving the egg bank and once the clinic in Poland received them a couple of days later.

The final step, before commencing the treatment, was another virtual consultation with myself as the nurse responsible for her care. The purpose of this consultation was to educate and prepare the patient for her treatment, providing all the necessary information about the cycle, including the timelines, how to perform the self-administered injections of the hormone medications, any potential side effects to be aware of and post transfer tips.

I ensured that the patient had all the contact details for our partner clinic in Poland as well as the relevant information about what to expect once she and her partner arrived at the clinic.

Throughout the treatment cycle, I was always available to support and reassure the patient and her partner – including at the time of blood tests, monitoring scans, egg thaw and fertilisation, embryo transfer, pregnancy test and viability ultrasound scan.

My goal was to help make the patient’s experience as personalised and stress-free as possible.

I very much enjoy the collaborative aspect of working alongside an international expert team of clinicians and embryologists, and it is indeed fulfilling helping families achieve their goal of having a baby.
