Should a semen analysis be repeated if borderline?

Should the semen analysis be repeated if borderline?

Male factor contributes to infertility in approximately 40% of couples who fail to conceive, causing significant psychosocial and marital stress. Every subfertile couple must make sure the male partner is tested. Semen analysis is an important fertility test, and it should be done before any treatments are decided. The fertility consultant will inform you that you need to abstain from intercourse for at least two to three days prior to taking the test.

There are several parameters that a semen analysis assesses, such as semen volume, total sperm count, sperm concentration, motility, vitality, and sperm morphology. The fertility consultant will interpret these for you. Having better or worse numbers than the WHO lower reference numbers, does not necessarily mean that you will or won’t be able to father a child. In fact, because so many factors can lead to a poor result, including recent illness or even stress over the test, your doctor will likely repeat the semen analysis in a few weeks. Especially if borderline, speak to the fertility consultant and be sure to disclose any possible causes for poor results. With proper treatment and preparation, your next semen analysis may very well produce a normal result. And if not, rest assured because we always have treatment options to offer you.
