Game, Set, Support: WTA's New Fertility Policy

In a groundbreaking step forward for women in sport, the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) recently announced that professional players who choose to freeze their eggs or embryos will now have their rankings protected while they take time away from the sport. They will be able to undergo fertility preservation treatment when it’s best for their health, not just when their schedule allows, without the absence having any detrimental impact on their career.

It’s a supportive move that recognizes how important timing and medical care are when it comes to fertility and one that we at NOW-fertility are delighted to see. It’s also an empowering reminder that planning for a future family at the same time as pursuing any kind of professional career can be entirely possible.

The decision to freeze eggs is a deeply personal one, and the reasons can vary from woman to woman.

For some, it’s about focusing on career goals or taking the time to pursue education or other life opportunities. Others may want to reach a certain level of financial stability before starting a family. Not having a partner they feel ready to start a family with can also play a role.

In some cases, women choose to freeze their eggs before undergoing medical treatments—such as chemotherapy—that could affect their future fertility.

Whatever the reason, egg freezing is a way for women to take control of their reproductive future and make choices on their own terms.
