Mitochondrial Health –
the energy of your cells, your eggs
Your eggs need energy to do their job properly. And that energy comes from tiny powerhouses inside each cell called ‘mitochondria’. Think of them as the batteries powering your eggs.
Here’s the thing: as we get older (and I say this as someone firmly in the 35+ club myself!), our mitochondrial function naturally declines.
It’s not a personal failing, it’s basic biology. But it does mean that your eggs might not have the energy reserves they need to be fertilised properly by the sperm, form an embryo that can divide correctly, and implant successfully.
- Eggs failed to fertilise
- "Poor quality" embryo grades despite good egg numbers
- Embryos with multiple fragments
- Embryos that stop developing at day 3 or 5
- Repeated implantation failure with no clear cause
What can you actually do about it?
This is where the magic of targeted nutrition comes in. Specific nutrients like NMN, Co-enzyme Q10, alpha-lipoic acid, Vitamin C and PQQ have been shown to support mitochondrial function.
But here’s the catch: you can’t just grab any old supplement off the shelf and hope for the best. Timing, dosage, and quality all matter enormously.
Women who want to improve egg quality naturally should be offered nutrition protocols that specifically target mitochondrial health based on their unique situation. It’s not a generic “eat more greens” approach, it’s precision nutrition for your cells, and your eggs.

IVF treatment during Ramadan
- Fasting during the month of Ramadan does not seem to have a significant effect on IVF outcome.
- Fasting is associated with a decrease in anxiety and depression, and this might be helpful in patients undergoing IVF treatment.
- Simple modifications in the timings of medications and injections can help patients go through the process smoothly with good results.
- However, it is recommended that couples undergoing IVF during Ramadan consult with their healthcare providers to ensure they are receiving adequate nutrition and to discuss any concerns they may have about the impact of fasting on their treatment.

Single and thinking about IVF?
Five important things to consider
1. Letting go of the expected path to parenthood
For many people, choosing IVF as a solo parent can bring up grief for the story you once imagined of how you would become a parent. There are ways of gently letting go of the original story and allowing yourself to embrace a new one.
2. Your support network
IVF as a solo parent doesn’t mean you need to do it alone. You might not have a romantic partner, but you can be surrounded by amazing people who can support you emotionally and practically.

3. The financial reality
It’s worth understanding in as much detail as possible the full picture as clearly as you can. Treatment, medication, storage, childcare, and the wider costs of raising a child, so you feel as informed and in control as possible.
4. Donor conception
Becoming a solo parent also means thinking carefully about donor conception. It can really help to research this early and to listen to the lived experiences of donor-conceived people, particularly those raised in solo-parent families as well as key researchers in this area.
5. Managing uncertainty
Fertility treatment involves waiting, unknowns, and outcomes you can’t always control. Think about who can support you through that.
If you’d like more support, consider joining The Stork and I Group coaching course for people exploring solo parenthood (see Events & Activities for more details).
