My contribution to patient’s embryo donation treatment in Spain

My contribution to patient’s embryo donation treatments in Spain

Author: Jessica Gruest (Fertility Nurse, NOW-fertility)

I have been privileged to care for some of NOW-fertility patients who have travelled to our partner clinic in Barcelona for IVF treatment with embryo donation.

Working together with a dedicated team of fertility professionals allows to go above and beyond in the patient’s care. For me, communication is key to the collaboration and the team in Barcelona are always available to provide answers, advice and support.

The whole process of IVF treatment using donated embryos was straightforward and my first priority was always that patients felt supported and well informed throughout their whole fertility journey with NOW-fertility.

After the initial virtual consultation with the fertility consultant and myself, we were able to organise the preliminary screening tests and plan the personalised protocol of treatment. I liaised with the team in Barcelona straightaway to inform them of the patient’s future fertility treatment cycle.

With embryo donation treatment, the first step is to find suitable donor embryos that best match the characteristics of the patient. For this, I take time to discuss things with my patient and ask to complete the characteristic form. The team at our partner clinic will confirm from their side once they have donated embryos with the right profile available, and then we can go ahead and start planning the treatment cycle. For the NOW-fertility patients that I have taken care of recently, matches were really quick to find.

I always plan several virtual consultations as well as phone calls with my patient to address any questions that she and her partner may have before, during and after the treatment cycle. I teach how to use the hormone medications correctly, inform about timelines, agree on exactly when to travel to our partner clinic in Barcelona and explain what will happen on the day of the embryo transfer.

I make sure I am always available for every step of the journey once her treatment starts, so that I can provide advice and reassurance as best as possible.

I like to build a trustworthy bond with my patients to anticipate any needs or worries that might arise, and be sure they always feel comfortable with what is happening.

Once the patient is ready for the embryo transfer, I remind her what will happen during the short procedure in Barcelona and who she will see when she gets there so that she feels reassured.

From personal experience, the patients I have had under my care felt that the fine tuned and personalised clinical approach between NOW-fertility and the partner clinic in Barcelona allows for a better and less stressful experience.
