Egg freezing – what to know?

Egg freezing - what to know

Authors: Dr Antoine Abu Musa, Chief Medical Officer, and Dr Luciano Nardo, Founder & President, NOW-fertility

The process of egg freezing involves several steps. Typically the first step is an initial consultation with a fertility specialist who takes a thorough medical history and arrange the investigations to assess the ovarian reserve in order to estimate the potential yield of eggs from the ovarian stimulation cycle. Ovarian stimulation is carried out in the same manner that is used for in-vitro fertilisation (IVF), using injectable hormone medications.

Throughout the ovarian stimulation phase, which normally takes 10-12 days, the woman will undergo regular monitoring by ultrasound scans and blood tests. These tests help the medical team track the development of follicles. Once the follicles have reached an appropriate size, a trigger shot is self administered to mature the eggs. Approximately 34-36 hours later, the egg retrieval procedure is performed. This is a minor surgical procedure conducted under sedation or light anaesthesia. A thin needle is inserted through the vaginal wall, or in some cases transabdominally, to aspirate the eggs from the follicles in the ovaries. The retrieved eggs are then taken to the laboratory, where they are evaluated under the microscope and those mature are cryopreserved for future use.
