Maintaining good general health is important for female fertility. Whilst some things may be out of your control or need medical help, there are some lifestyle factors that can influence your fertility potential:
Nutrition
A balanced diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains helps to provide essential nutrients for reproductive health. An adequate intake of vitamins and minerals such as vitamin D, iron, calcium and folic acid is also important. Try to avoid too much processed food or refined sugars, which are often found in sweets and fizzy drinks.
Weight
Both underweight and overweight women may experience weight-related ovulation issues. Maintaining a healthy weight through a balanced diet and exercise can help to improve fertility outcomes.
Exercise
Regular physical activity can have a positive impact on fertility as well as contribute to overall good health. However exercising excessively is not advisable, as it could lead to irregular menstrual cycles and decreased fertility potential.
Alcohol & Smoking
Excessive alcohol consumption and smoking can both have a negative impact on fertility, so if you are trying to conceive it is advisable to stop smoking altogether and to either stop or at least limit your alcohol intake.
Stress Management
High levels of stress can potentially affect hormone levels and disrupt ovulation. Stress reducing techniques including yoga, mindfulness or meditation may be helpful and some women also find complementary therapies such as acupuncture or reflexology beneficial.
Sexual Health
Maintaining good sexual health, including preventing sexually transmitted infections, is important for fertility.
By prioritising good general health, you can optimise your chances of conception and of a healthy pregnancy. However if you are still experiencing difficulty in conceiving despite a healthy lifestyle and regular unprotected intercourse, it is recommended to consult a fertility specialist for further advice.
